Palace.
The first in our series of events during our campaign to Return Film to the United Palace was a celebration of the story of Sosua,
the town in the Dominican Republic that welcomed 800 Jews fleeing
Hitler in 1938. This little known story was brought to life by teenagers
who participated in a musical theatre program with the YM&YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood over the past few years. The performance was preceded by a screening of the documentary film "Sosua: Make a Better World" about the students' efforts to mount the musical. The two parts of the evening were a perfect fit with UPCA's mission to provide transformative artistic experiences for audiences and captured how we hope to use the magic of movies to accentuate other art forms in helping explore the ideas, stories, and issues of the day.
